Blyton July 1994. This was my second ever race. The guy on the orange bike is my cousin 'little' John Hicken. For this race there was only the two of us in the team as everyone else had jibbed out. I had my longest ever stint doing 2 1/2 hours in one go. We also had 2 punctures on the rear tyre. I was even riding on the flat although it was slowing me down on the straights and we only gave up when the engine started to vibrate badly. I did well to take this photo as I was lap timing at the time. We finished last I think.
Blyton September 1996. This is a chap called Eddie cornering pretty fast at Blyton in 96.He's just coming onto the straight in the above photo. As he's leading some other fast looking bikes, the bike must be doing well for a change. He's also got it leaned over at quite an angle. We did quite well this race coming 4th in class. We would have got in the top three if the exhaust hadn't have fallen in two.
Rowrah May 1996. This is Mark of team 28-No Fear at the last corner of Rowrah. He used to ride my machine regularly until he got his own bike. But the only thing his machine does regularly is break down, so he still has a go sometimes. This was the first race we used this bike and the front tyre turned out to be made of concrete by the Death Runner factory. No one could stay on the thing. We kept falling off the darn thing and damaged the gear linkage.
Rowrah May 1996. This is me! It's shot at the same corner as above. As you can see we had a slightly different line though it. He choose to cut in earlier than me, but as the corner opened out a bit I thought it was a good idea to stay wide so I could use all the power coming out of the bend to get up the big straight (well big for Rowrah) that followed.
Rowrah May 1996. Wow!!! Who'd have thought it possible to get speed blur on a moped picture!!! Same bend at Rowrah, just a little further on. Still this looked so good I just had to put it on.
Rowrah May 1996. This one is taken at the hairpin at the old Rowrah circuit berfore it was extended. The bend now goes in the opposite direction. The chap on the bike is called Karl, who thanks to a T**T in a car, can't ride anymore, which is a shame as he enjoyed it and was pretty good.
Rowrah May 1996. Here is one of Ernie Sheldons gems. No moped album would be complete without at least one. This is based on a CB50. Notice the dry clutch, the racing brake and the drool on the tank where I had a good look at it.
Blyton September 1996. Relaxing before the hard nights drinking. How many idiots does it take to ride a moped? 5 and one to get proof! They said they wanted one more to go on their shoulders, but I had the good excuse of taking the pics. I may race mopeds but even I'm not THAT stupid.
Trackside Manby May 1994. This is the first time I went moped racing. I'm on the right, Mark is in the middle and my brother Stuart on the left. I'd just finished the race, thrown off my jacket and helmet, and was told to pose for a photo. No one told me I'd got a bad case of 'Hat Hair'. Can you see the bottom of the number has got a strange cut out shape? It was where the front tyre rubbed under heavy breaking. And the brown Metro on the right, was how we carried the bike to the race. Professional we weren't.
This is me at Blyton in 1995. I'm flat out round this bend on the lightweight 95 spec machine. This really was a flyweight ,but at his race ,it wasn't running too well. I think the exhaust valve was set too tight and it was blowing slightly. But it ran for six hours soild and we got our first ever points.
This is how moped races start A Le Mans style start where riders race across the track and push start their machines. Occasionally it can look quite impressive. I'm right at the back as usual, and I prefer it that way. I like to keep out of trouble because it can get a bit crowded at the first corner. As the race is six hours long, there seems little point to me in fighting for 3 seconds on the first lap.
I have no idea where this is, who it is or anything, but I just thought I'd show anybody whose never been to a moped race, that we race sidecars too. And they are not like Wallace & Gromit. The're just like real racing sidecars only smaller and cheaper. But if you've ever been in the chair on one of these things, you'll know how kn*****ing they are.
Finally one of me. See, I don't just race mopeds. I'm in Kavos on Corfu and I'd just thrown myself 200 ft from a perfectly good crane.
